SVGs have been updated

[edit]

Hi SHB2000, I hope you don't mind me contacting you like this. The comment thread on QI was getting a bit long, and I think this makes for easier conversation. I uploaded a new version of the following files and checked them for errors:

Thank you, ReneeWrites! Much appreciated :-). --SHB2000 (talk) 20:58, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Though one minor issue: it seems the SVG code still uses a serif font (instead of the official Lato) – do you know how to fix this? --SHB2000 (talk) 22:07, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I adjusted the font, but had to expand the text to be able to keep it in. These are the fonts available to me for rendering in SVG. (I tried linking to the font from within the SVG file and even embedding it directly, but Commons would not allow me to upload the file like that - got an error message that said "Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file" which seems to be related to the font tag specifically.)
As luck would have it Lato is published under the Open Font License so it can be added to that list and properly embedded after, but considering the relative inactivity of both the main page and talk page, this could take a while. ReneeWrites (talk) 00:04, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see – thanks again for the help! --SHB2000 (talk) 03:25, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comments  Comment Has embedded raster graphics, which is a no-go for svg files, but I can remove it later. ReneeWrites 21:40, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
